FUSION TEXTILE ARTISTS

In 2000 Fusion Textile Artists was established to provide a forum for a group of textile artists who share common interests. Regular meetings give opportunities to discuss each other’s work and obtain constructive criticism and mutual mentoring. A regular feature is an annual residential weekend at which a nationally acclaimed tutor leads the group in design approaches. Some years this has been supplemented with a one or two-day session led by one of their own members.

Membership numbers have varied but currently stand at 12. Members come from different localities in the North East and have varied backgrounds. Some have studied visual arts; most have undertaken some form of training – either in City & Guilds Creative studies, or degrees in textiles or surface design, though some are self-taught, developing their skills from what may have started as a hobby. This diversity is an advantage as they can, and do, learn from one another’s experience and knowledge.

The majority of members are also members of the Embroiderers’ Guild. Several provide talks and workshops to the Guild or other textile organisations. Some do project work in schools, hospitals and community groups. Some have had articles published in magazines and booklets

Another aspect of this group is an enthusiasm to exhibit their work together. What may be difficult for an individual becomes more viable when 10 or 12 get together and work to a mutual theme.

Exhibition spaces have included Hartlepool Art Gallery, the Durham Light Infantry Museum and Art Gallery, Farfield Mill in Sedbergh and private galleries in North Yorkshire, Northumberland and Castle Douglas
