Donna Cheshire MA

Textile Alchemy in a Newcastle Studio

Donna Cheshire aims to reconnect us with the beauty and strength of the landscape. Being out in the natural environment grounds us, gives us breathing space and a sense of joy. Donna aims to remind us of simple pleasures and what makes life worth living. Often working in series and themes, she develops distinct collections using stitch, appliqué and hand dyed fabrics.

Donna studied textile design to Masters level; specialising in printed textiles for interiors and, while she still hand colours fabrics for her work, she has found her metier as a freelance textile artist, developing her passion for appliqué and free machine stitch.

She also runs workshops for the public, in hospitals, with adults with learning disabilities and in schools. Donna loves encouraging others to have fun with textiles and get creative. Donna is also happy to take commissions from individuals and organisations.

Donna is gaining a reputation in the North East and beyond. In 2016 she was presented with the Gold Award for Textiles and Needlecraft in the Craft & Design Magazine’s Selected Maker Awards. She has exhibited at the British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate, The Contemporary Textiles Fair in Teddington, The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle, Gallery 45 in Northumberland, Farfield Mill in Sedburgh, and Space Artworks Gallery in Edinburgh. Her work has appeared in Craft & Design magazine, Cloth Paper Scissors magazine and features in the ‘Creative Appliqué’ book. Donna exhibits regularly with the Fusion Textile Artists and also takes part in LoveArtNorthEast events across Newcastle. Donna is a member of Network Artists North East and sells direct to the public via in her lovetextiles shop.
